Utah Highway Patrol troopers will have an unusual addition to their uniform through the end of the year.
About 400 state troopers have volunteered to wear a pink ribbon in honor of one of their own who is battling breast cancer. The addition of the ribbon also happens to coincide with October's national breast cancer awareness month.
Bonnie Kunz, a trooper assigned to Salt Lake Community College and mother of six, is currently undergoing breast cancer treatment at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, the hospital said Thursday.
"It means a lot to have so many of my co-workers supporting me by wearing the pink ribbons," Kunz said in a statement. "It's hard to really put into words. If you know how strict the highway patrol is about its uniform, it's amazing this was approved."
Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson said troopers started to wear the ribbons in August and will continue to do so through Dec. 31.
