Family-owned metal shop in Ogden completing expansion

Richards Sheet Metal Works in Ogden celebrated its 85th anniversary by breaking ground on its fourth building.

The family-owned metal manufacturing company is owned by Stephen Richards, a third-generation member of the family that started the company.

It provides materials for the transportation, water treatment, waste management, food services, sanitation, aerospace, pharmaceutical, military, machinery and mining industries. Workers specialize in laser cutting, precision forming, high-definition plasma, C N C punching, welding, tool design, painting and prototyping.

The new expansion on a fourth building will increase the size of the company's operation from 70,000 to 90,000 square feet.

"We have continually upgraded our equipment to ensure that we are competitive and have the high-tech tools necessary to complete the most detailed projects," said Richards. "In fact, Richards was recently recognized nationally as a FAB 40 metal fabrication company and ranked number 22 in the country by The Fabricator magazine."

The company reported revenue of $16.3 million in 2012. It plans to open its new facility in October with an open house and company picnic.

I.L. Richards founded the company in 1928 as Richards Tin Shop in a 400-square foot shop on 24th Street in Ogden during the Depression. The company initially developed stove flues, small tin bathtubs and watering troughs, which were purchased by the U.S. Forest Service.

"The individual expertise of our employees is truly remarkable and adds to the depth of services that we offer as a company," said company president Sterling N. Jensen. "Many of our employees have been here 20, 30 and 40 years."
