Five jailed for Kearns drive-by shooting

Three adults and two juveniles had been arrested and were behind bars on Tuesday, the day after they allegedly were involved in a suspected gang-related drive-by shooting in Kearns.

Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said a 17-year-old male, identified as the shooter, was booked into a juvenile detention facility on suspicion of attempted homicide. The teen also was wanted for violating parole on an unspecified, earlier incident.

A 16-year-old female also was booked into juvenile detention on suspicion of conspiracy to commit attempted homicide and obstructing justice; three males, ages 19, 19 and 20, were booked into Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of conspiracy and obstruction.

The arrests came in the wake of gunfire directed at a home in the area of 4800 West and 5000 South about 6:15 p.m. Monday. Witnesses heard numerous shots and then saw a silver Ford Mustang with five people inside flee the area.

A UPD officer spotted the suspect vehicle a short time later near 5600 South and Northwest Avenue (4600 West). The suspects were detained and when a search of the car yielded a shotgun and numerous spent shell casings, the five were arrested.

No one inside the targeted house was hurt, though several shots hit the home and its windows.

Hoyal said no other suspects were being sought at this time.
