Police in Salt Lake County find multiple missing hikers

Unified Police conducted two successful search and rescue operations Saturday night for lost hikers.

The first search began at 5:30 p.m. when police learned that a 37-year-old woman had become lost on the north Mill B area of Big Cottonwood Canyon. Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said the woman, who was hiking alone, spoke with police via her cellphone and said she got lost after walking about 4.5 miles.

Police continued communicating with the woman during the search, though poor reception limited conversations.

Searchers located the woman about 9:15 p.m. using ground crews and a helicopter. She was finally helped down the mountain after 10 p.m.

The second search began at 5:40 on Mt. Olympus. According to Hoyal, two 24-year-old men wandered about 600 feet off the trail and became lost. The search ended about 9:45 when crews located the men and helped them down the mountain.

Hoyal said all of the hikers were uninjured.

The searches came the same day that Davis County crews rescued a 52-year-old man from the Great Western Trail near Fernwood Park. It was the second time this year searchers had to retrieve the man from the same area.
