Injured hiker spends night on Mount Timpano..

A woman climbed Mount Timpanogos before sunrise and wound up seeing two up there after suffering a knee injury.

The 22-year-old Cache County woman and a 21-year-old Utah County man started climbing the mountain at midnight Saturday, said Utah County Sheriff's Lt. Tom Hodgson. It is common for people to start hiking that early to catch the sunrise, the lieutenant said.

But by 4 p.m. Saturday, emergency responders got word that the woman had hurt her knee and could not climb back down.

She and a search and rescue team wound up spending Saturday night in a shelter on the mountain at about 11,700 feet, Hodgson said.

By Sunday morning, crews used rope lines to help her down Mount Timpanogos and through some snow fields until they reached a landing zone about 1,200 feet below the shelter.

A medical helicopter met them at the landing zone and brought the woman to a parking lot by 1:30 p.m., where her family was waiting.

Her family took her to a hospital for treatment. Besides the knee, she's OK, Hodgson said.
