Kevin Paulson, running for Soren Simonsen's seat on the City Council, has publicly stated his opposition to bike lanes in his mailers and on his website.
If Paulson had done his homework, he would understand that bike lanes have a traffic-calming effect making the streets safer for everyone, young and old, including the physically disadvantaged. And studies show they reduce accidents. Motorists find them advantageous since the slower-moving bicyclists are removed from the travel lane, thereby no longer slowing or impeding impatient drivers.
Most residents will vote for a more livable, pedestrian and bike-friendly community. The vitality and quality of life of a city is measured by the number of people who use the streets and sidewalks, not by the speed of the motorists.
