Police are trying to confirm the identity of a man struck and killed late Sunday night as he walked down the middle of a traffic lane in west Salt Lake City.

Salt Lake City police Sgt. Robin Heiden said Monday the man, believed to be in his 50s, was wearing dark clothing when he tried to cross poorly lit 900 West near 150 South. An SUV driven by a 38-year-old woman hit him. The man was dead at the scene when paramedics arrived.

Heiden said the driver briefly left the scene by quickly returned and was fully cooperating with investigators. Because of that, it was uncertain Monday if the driver would face a possible hit-and-run charge.

The man had no identification on him.

Heiden said anyone with information on the victim and/or the accident is asked to call Salt Lake City police at 801-799-3000.
