'SLC Punk' filmmaker needs your money for a sequel [video]

"SLC Punk" is coming back, and you can be a part of it.

James Merendino, who wrote and directed the cult-fave 1999 comedy-drama, has finished his script for a sequel, "SLC Punk 2: Punk's Dead," and has launched a crowd-funding campaign on Indiegogo to pay for it.

"This is going to be like '2001: A Space Odyssey' for punks!," Merendino declares in an enthusiastic if not entirely coherent video pitch (which you can view by clicking on the embedded video above).

The campaign launched Sunday, with a goal of raising $250,000 by the deadline of Dec. 11. In a day, the campaign has already earned more than $11,000 in pledges.

"The thing I find appealing about crowd sourcing is that it's a way for everybody to join the party, we are all VIPs, we are all big shots," Merendino said in a statement.

The incentives for pledging range from a PDF of the script as a 2014 Christmas present (for $10) to an associate producer's credit (for $50,000). One major perk, to have your band play in the movie, has already been snapped up.

The original "SLC Punk," which premiered at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival, was based on Merendino's remembrances of growing up a punk in Utah. It starred Matthew Lillard and Michael Goorjian as Stevo and Heroin Bob, two young punks in Mormon-dominated Salt Lake City. The original cast also included Annabeth Gish, Til Schweiger, Michael Goorjian, Devon Sawa, Jason Segel, Chris McDonald and Adam Pascal.

Merendino says most of the original cast is expected back, and a new generation of actors also will be featured. A 2014 release is planned.
