Charges filed in Kearns drive-by shooting

Prosecutors have filed charges against three people for a reported drive-by shooting last week.

Each person was charged on Monday in 3rd District Court with six counts of attempted murder, which are first-degree felonies, as well as four counts of felony discharge of a firearm and a single count of obstructing justice, which are second-degree felonies.

On Oct. 21, a male was playing football with four of his siblings outside his home in the area of 4800 West and 5000 South when someone slowly drove by in a silver Mustang, according to the charges.

The male saw someone get out of the car with a short shotgun that the suspect raised and fired toward the male and his family, according to the charges. The family ran inside the home and heard several more shots, the charges add.

The male then saw the Mustang drive by his home again and heard three more shots, one of which hit a window of his house, according to the charges.

A Unified Police officer spotted the suspect vehicle a short time later near 5600 South and Northwest Avenue (4600 West). The suspects were detained. When a search of the car yielded a shotgun and numerous spent shell casings, the suspects were arrested.

No one inside the targeted house was hurt, though several shots hit the home and its windows.
