Snow capped northern Utah's mountains Tuesday and caused the first reported slab avalanches of the season.

Nine inches fell at Alta, where a 60-foot avalanche was reported in Collins Gulch, according to the Utah Avalanche Center.

Ten inches fell at Silver Lake in Brighton, with 8 inches at the base of Snowbird, reported Mike Seaman, meteorologist with the National Weather Service. Several inches of snow also fell along Interstate 80 in Parleys Canyon, east of Salt Lake City, but the no closures were ordered.

A winter storm warning was in effect until 3 a.m. Wednesday for pockets of southeast Utah centering around Monticello.

Scattered rain and snow showers were expected to continue Wednesday in most of the state, warming to rain showers in the afternoon. Temperatures in northern Utah were projected to reach 51 degrees in Salt Lake City and Provo, 50 in Ogden, and 49 in Brigham City and Logan.

Elsewhere in the state, highs were forecast at 56 in Moab, 47 in Cedar City, 62 in St. George, 52 in Wendover, 49 in Price and 48 in Vernal.
