Cops: 1 West Valley City home invasion suspect knocked out, 2 others flee

One suspect in a foiled early morning home invasion robbery in West Valley City was in critical condition while his two partners in the alleged crime remained at large on Wednesday.

West Valley City police Sgt. Jason Hauer said it was an 8-year-old boy living in the home who made the first call at 5:17 a.m. More 911 calls came in from other residents of the home and neighbors as police rushed to 7133 W. Chula Drive (3705 South).

"When our officers arrived they encountered two adult male residents of the home who had physically detained one of the suspects. He was unconscious and bleeding from a cut above the eye and his mouth," Hauer said.

Residents told officers that three men — all described as black males, 5-foot-10 to 6-foot in height, of medium build, wearing masks and dark clothing — broke into the home.

They quickly found several angry adults, along with five children, inside the residence. A fight ensued and one of the suspects, armed with a semi-automatic pistol, was knocked out while the other two suspects fled.

Police said the injured suspect was taken to a hospital, where he remained unconscious late Wednesday morning.

A containment area was set up by police, but the suspects were not found.

No one inside the home was hurt during the fight, but a woman who jumped from a second-floor window suffered a twisted ankle.

Hauer said police were investigating to learn more about why the invaders targeted the home.
