A Carbon County jail employee was arrested Wednesday on allegations of rape and aggravated sexual assault of a child.

John Gerald Shiew, 35, of Carbonville, was arrested on suspicion of rape, a first-degree felony; aggravated sexual assault of a child, a second-degree felony; child abuse, two counts of enticing a minor, and two counts of furnishing alcohol to a minor, all class A misdemeanors; and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, class B misdemeanors, according to the Price City Police Department.

Police said because the investigation is ongoing, no additional information was being provided Thursday.

Because Shiew worked as a civilian employee at the Carbon County Jail, for his safety he was booked into the Emery County jail, police said.

Shiew was placed on administrative leave from his jail job pending an internal investigation.
