Soccer • Former San Jose Earthquakes coach Frank Yallop was hired Thursday as the new head coach and director of soccer for the Chicago Fire.

Yallop, 49, replaces Frank Klopas, who was fired Tuesday after New York eliminated the Fire from the MLS playoff race for the third time in the last four seasons.

San Jose fired Yallop, a native of England, midway through the season after the Earthquakes opened 3-6-6. He was coach of the year in 2012 in his second stint with San Jose. In his first stint, the Earthquakes won the MLS Cup twice in a three-year span.

• Columbus Crew midfielder Eddie Gaven is retiring after 11 MLS seasons.

The 27-year-old tallied 51 goals and 37 assists in 278 games.

Since joining the Crew from the New York/New Jersey MetroStars in 2006, Gaven helped the club to the 2008 and 2009 Supporters' Shields, along with the 2008 MLS Cup title against his former club.
