Utah forecast: Big change as storm expected to move in Sunday

When it comes to Utah weather, expect a Bob Dylan kind of weekend.

"The Times They Are a Changin'" applies both to the weather and the end of daylight savings time, with Saturday's beautiful weather being replaced by colder temperatures and potential snow Sunday and Utahns needing to move their clocks back an hour before going to bed.

Then there's the line, "You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows," from another Dylan song. Winds were expected to pick up Saturday night and continue Sunday, with north-northwest winds of eight to 14 miles per hour expected in the Salt Lake and Tooele valleys.

The National Weather Service is predicting cooler temperatures, rain or snow and brisk winds in much of Utah on Sunday and Monday.

In Salt Lake City, there is a chance of rain showers Sunday before noon, followed by the possibility of snow showers in the afternoon. Expect mostly cloudy skies with a high near 41. The forecast calls for a 50 percent chance of precipitation, with new snow accumulation of less than a half-inch possible. Sunday night's lows could drop to around 27 degrees with a 20 percent chance of snow, with wind gusts hitting up to eight miles per hour.

On Monday in Salt Lake City, expect a 30 percent chance of snow showers, mainly after noon, with mostly cloudy skies and highs near 38. There will be a 20 percent chance of snow showers at night with a low around 25.

Then things begin to warm up a bit with mostly sunny skies Tuesday, before another potential storm moves in Wednesday.

Ski resorts hoping for a mid-November opening might receive some good news from this storm. The forecast calls for accumulations of between two and four inches in the Wasatch Mountains Sunday.

Cache Valley residents can expect Sunday lows to drop to the 20s, with a 70 percent chance of precipitation. On the other hand, weather should be nice in southern Utah, with highs Sunday around 70 and lows dropping to around 40 under partly cloudy skies. There is a 20 percent chance of rain showers Monday morning.
