Snowy morning, afternoon ahead for parts of Utah

Many northern Utahns woke up Sunday to the sight of the white fluffy stuff.

Granted, the snow didn't really stick to the valley floors, but it was a sign that winter is a'coming to the valleys.

The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City said the snowfall was expected last into the early afternoon in northern and central portions of Utah.

The latest storm system was expected to dump a few inches of snow in the mountains, but very little accumulations were expected in valleys. By 5 p.m. Sunday, Cottonwood Heights reported a tenth of an inch of snow, while in the higher elevations, Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort reported 1.12 inches of new snow and Alta reported 1.73 inches.

By Monday — just in time for the morning commute — the snow system is expected to have moved out of northern Utah, leaving only a 20 percent chance of snow showers.

But the storm system is expected to linger Monday in central and southern parts of Utah, bringing snow to those areas. Intermittent snow showers are also possible along the central Wasatch Front near the Great Salt Lake, according to the weather service.

The weather service said the cold front will stall across southern Utah and snow levels are expected to drop to about 5,000 feet there.

A few inches of snow is expected in the mountains, with minor accumulations in the higher valleys.

Salt Lake City's high hit 45 on Sunday and is expected to reach 40 on Monday; Ogden had a Sunday high of 45 and expected a Monday high of 41, respectively; Provo 46 and 43; Logan 42 and 38; Wendover 45 and 41; Duchesne 52 and 39; Cedar City 58 and 44; St. George 70 and 61; and Moab 64 and 49 degrees.
