Daniel McArthur, mayor of St. George for a generation, finally came to the end of his long run Tuesday night.

Councilman Jon Pike beat McArthur by a convincing margin — 61 percent to 39 percent — in the municipal election.

Pike is a SelectHealth executive and also vice chairman of Dixie State University's board. He has promised to scrutinize city operations to ensure maximum efficiency. Pike also has said it is time to develop a new strategic plan for the future.

"I would like St. George to be the most livable city in the United States," Pike said on his website. "This means we must focus on public safety, education, infrastructure, as well as things that we and visitors enjoy such as arts, parks and recreational opportunities. I will find ways to partner with other levels of government, groups and individuals to achieve this lofty goal."

McArthur, first elected mayor in 1994 after serving a decade on the city council, was seeking a sixth term.

During his tenure, St. George's population has doubled.
