Letter: What might have been if Bennett had been re-elected

It's interesting to speculate on events had Republicans not ousted Sen. Bob Bennett and elected Mike Lee. Probably:

• The moderate, pragmatic Bennett would have joined with similarly minded Republicans in discussing meaningful compromise legislation and worked with Democratic counterparts in passing it,

• Important national services would have remained open and their employees spared financial hardship and uncertainty,

• The nation would have been spared a disgraceful spectacle of congressional ineptitude, and

• The public confidence in Congress would not have dropped to a record low.
