Raise a glass to the residents of Hyde Park who on Tuesday voted to allow beer sales in their tiny Cache Valley town.

According to election results posted on the town's website — residents voted 859 to 481 to lift a long-standing ban on the sale of alcohol in city limits.

Before Tuesday, the small town of about 4,000 residents was one of a handful of dry cities in the state.

Now Hyde Park's only convenience store, Maverik, can sell 3.2-weight beer. Residents will still have to drive a few miles Logan to get liquor and higher-alcohol beer at the state-run liquor store in Logan.

Late last year, the convenience store asked the council to consider lifting the ban. After much discussion, the council voted 3-2 to lift the ban. A group of Hyde Park residents stepped in, gathering the 500 signatures needed to send the issue to a vote.

The convenience store is respectful of the town's culture and plans to build a beer vault in the back corner of the store, Danielle Mattiussi, Maverik's executive regional director of operations, told The Associated Press before the election.
