Letter: Herbert should take counsel of LDS ..

On Oct. 25, 2000, LDS President Thomas Monson, then president of the Council of Twelve Apostles, spoke at the Coalition for Utah's Future, Common Good Awards Luncheon.

In part he said, "When we have eyes that see and ears that hear, and hearts that know and feel, we will recognize current trends and current needs of our fellow beings among us who cry out for help. How do they eat — without food? How do they keep warm — without clothing? Without shelter? How do they live — without means? How do they get well — without doctors, medicines and hospitals? I believe that when we face our Maker, we will not be asked, 'How many positions did you hold' but rather, 'How many people did you help?'"

These words seem particularly pertinent to Gov. Gary Herbert and Medicaid expansion. I urge the governor to accept increased funding for Medicaid to help those Jesus Christ called "the least of these." Medicaid expansion would save money by preventing and treating medical problems early on instead of using the emergency room and would create thousands of jobs.

Please, Governor, stand up for what is right and don't bow to partisan politics!
