Brighton Resort is edging out Solitude Mountain Resort for the earliest opening in the 2013-14 ski season — offering free skiing from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. today.

Like Solitude, its Big Cottonwood Canyon neighbor, Brighton had previously announced plans to open Friday.

But with a series of good snowmaking nights and some natural snow, Brighton decided to invite skiers up early, said Jared Winkler, marketing director.

"We've got three good runs and it should be a lot of fun," he said.

On Friday, an opening day lift ticket price for Brighton will be $37.
