Speedskating: Shani Davis finishes second in 1500 at Calgary

Two-time Olympic champion Shani Davis led the U.S. Speedskating team by finishing second in the 1,500 meters on the opening day of the World Cup speedskating season Friday in Calgary.

Davis clocked 1 minute, 43.11 seconds to finish 0.33 seconds behind winner Koen  Verweij of the Netherlands. Davis holds the world record in the event, at 1:41.04.

Heather Richardson and Brittany Bowe, the top American women, finished fifth and ninth, respectively, in the first of two women's 500-meter races that will be contested over the weekend. Richardson finished in 37.61 and Bowe 37.69 — far behind Lee Sang-hwa of South Korea, the world-record holder and reigning Olympic champion who clocked 36.91.

Mitchell Whitmore was the top American man in the 500, finishing in 34.68; the Netherlands' Ronald Mulder won in 34.41.
