Apple's iPad mini goes on sale today

Apple announced that the newest version of its smaller iPad mini will go on sale Tuesday.

The computer tablet, which has a 7.9-inch Retina Display with a higher resolution than last year's iPad mini, will start at $399. Apple stated during a media briefing last month that the new version would be available sometime in November.

The release of the mini comes just a couple of weeks after the release of its bigger sibling, the 9.7-inch iPad Air, which starts at $499. In October, the Cupertino, Calif., company also released the new iPhone 5S with a fingerprint sensor for security and the lower-cost iPhone 5C, which comes in different colors.

In addition to the higher-resolution screen, the mini also has the more powerful A7 processor, the same chip used in the iPhone 5S and iPad Air. It will be sold in storage capacities of 16, 32, 64 and 128 gigabytes and also in models with built-in 4G LTE connectivity.

In the company's fourth-quarter earnings call late last month, Apple CEO Tim Cook alluded to the possibility that there may not be enough iPad minis to meet the holiday demand, saying "It's unclear whether we will have enough for the quarter or not."
