The Utah County Sheriff's Office on Thursday identified a female hiker who died after slipping and falling on the way down from Bridal Veil Falls in Provo Canyon.

Sheriff's Lt. Yvette Rice said Kaitlin Keeney, 20, of Salt Lake County, suffered severe head injuries when she tumbled 40 feet about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Her female climbing companion used a cellular phone to call 911, summoning emergency crews and rescue personnel.

Rice said detectives did investigate the incident, per policy, but the death was believed strictly accidental.

Keeney died at the scene despite efforts by paramedics to revive her, Rice said.

"Our thoughts are with the Keeney family as they deal with the tragic loss of their daughter at this time," Rice added.
