A two-fisted storm system out of western Canada moved over northern Utah on Friday, building toward a weekend of periodic blowing snow and chilly temperatures.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory beginning 3 a.m. Saturday and running through 6 a.m. Sunday for the northern Wasatch Range. Up to 14 inches of snow, propelled by westerly winds of 20 mph, were expected in the mountains and several inches could blanket the region's valleys.

Forecasters said the first pulse of wintry weather was to begin in earnest late Friday night and early Saturday morning. The second pulse was to kick in Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

The Salt Lake and Tooele valleys could see additional, localized snowfall due to the "Lake Effect," a precipitation-enhancing phenomenon that occurs when a cold front blows across the warmer waters of the Great Salt Lake.

Indeed, Friday dawned with rain at lower elevations and some light snow in the benches for Salt Lake area. High temperatures Saturday were to be in the low- to mid-40s with overnight lows near freezing — a forecast that mirrored Friday's.

Southern Utahns were getting a partial pass on the colder weekend weather, with highs around 60 degrees on Saturday, down a few degrees from Friday's forecast. Overnight lows were to be in the upper-30s, though winds of 10-20 mph were on the menu both days.
