Baseball • Tim Hudson is headed back to the Bay Area. The San Francisco Giants have agreed to a $23 million, two-year contract with the free-agent pitcher, who began his career with Oakland. Hudson had a physical Monday, and the team said the deal is pending the results of that examination.
Hudson made his major league debut with the Athletics in 1999 and went 92-39 in six seasons with Oakland. The 38-year-old Hudson went 8-7 with a 3.97 ERA in 21 starts this season for Atlanta. His season was cut short by a broken right ankle that required surgery.
Southern Utahin FCS top 25
college football • Southern Utah has moved into the top 25 in both major Football Championship Subdivision polls. Coming off a 22-14 win at Montana State, the Thunderbirds are ranked 20th in the Sports Network media poll. They are No. 22 in the NCAA coaches poll.
SUU, 8-3 overall, is one of five Big Sky Conference teams ranked in both polls.
The Thunderbirds will host Northern Arizona (No. 10 in the media poll and No. 12 in the coaches poll) on Saturday.
Meyer changes tune on BCS
college football • The Bowl Championship Series has been good to Urban Meyer. He led two Florida teams to national championships under the format in the 2006 and 2008 seasons. Each time the Gators lost a game in the regular season, but still played for the BCS title.
But now that he's the coach at Ohio State, and his unbeaten team could be on its way to being boxed out of the national title race, he's looking differently at the system for choosing which teams play for the crown.
"Without spending much time on it, because it's not fair for our team to do that, I will say this: I think it's a flawed system," Meyer said.
