A woman died and a man is in extremely critical condition following a head-on crash Monday in Sanpete County.

Just after 7 a.m., a woman was driving north on U.S. Highway 89 when she hit a dead deer near mile post 246, a few miles north of Gunnison, causing her to lose control of her 2004 Pontiac, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

She then crossed into the center line, hitting a southbound vehicle head-on.

The woman from the northbound vehicle, Kay Marie Matthews, 42, died at Gunnison Valley Hospital. The driver of the southbound vehicle, Brady Kyle Simons, 19, was flown to the hospital in extremely critical condition, according to UHP.
