Letter: Cartoon says it all about climate change

Climate change deniers are vociferous in their opposition to those who accept that climate change is happening and want to do something about it. A political cartoon by Joel Pett describes my position perfectly:

Imagine an on-stage presentation at a climate summit in which the presenter's screen projection describes the potential benefits of combating climate change:

- energy independence

- preserve rain forests

- sustainability

- green jobs

- livable cities

- renewables

- clean water, air

- healthy children

Now imagine a man standing up in the audience and asking: "What if it's a big hoax and we create a better world for nothing?"

I am astounded that there are those who are willing to take such huge gambles because they are so certain that their position is correct. We owe it to our children, grandchildren and future generations, as well as to life on the planet, to work to avoid ever-more-frequent disasters.

The ultimate gamble is to do nothing, is to avoid massive action to avert catastrophe because we think it "might" not be happening.

There is so much to lose and so much to save.
