An Oakley man was in serious condition Wednesday morning after an accidental shooting incident.

Summit County Sheriff's Capt. Justin Martinez said the shooting was reported in the foothills above Oakley, a town of 900 residents, at about 8 a.m.

Martinez said the man, in his early 20s, had been out elk hunting with his girlfriend and the pair had just returned to his pickup truck when the incident occurred.

The woman was unloading a bolt-action rifle when it discharged, striking the man in the knee.

The man was stabilized by medical personnel responding to a 911 call and then flown by helicopter to a Salt Lake City hospital.

His wound was not believed to be life-threatening; a tourniquet had reportedly been applied to the man's leg immediately after the incident.
