Salt Lake City police on Thursday were trying to identify a suspect in a fatal stabbing outside the Road Home shelter.

Police said the male victim, whose identity was being withheld pending notification of kin, was found with a stab wound to the abdomen about 6 p.m. Wednesday at 210 S. Rio Grande. Detective Cody Lougy described the victim as a black man in his late 40s.

Lougy said police got a call about the incident, but by the time they responded, the man had already been taken to a hospital, where he died. Police do not know if the man was stabbed where emergency responders found him, or if he arrived in the area already wounded.

Investigators spent most of Thursday canvassing the area where the man was found looking for witnesses. Lougy was optimistic that witnesses could be located, saying that area's "just too well traveled" for no one to have seen him.

Police had not located the weapon used against the man Thursday afternoon. Lougy did not have information about the man's background or origin.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call SLCPD at 801-799-3000.
