Woman dies of injuries in Ogden auto-pedestrian accident

An SUV struck a man and woman in an Ogden crosswalk Thursday night, fatally injuring the woman and hospitalizing her companion.

Ogden police Lt. Tim Scott said Tiffany Phipps, 32, died of severe head trauma just before midnight at McKay-Dee Hospital.

Scott said Friday that the couple were crossing the intersection of Wall Avenue and Binford Street at 6:46 p.m. when a northbound Jeep Wrangler hit them. Phipps took the brunt of the collision with the front of the vehicle; the 25-year-old man escaped with foot and ankle injuries caused by a tire.

Scott said there were no indications that alcohol or speeding were factors, although gusty winds at the time had disabled traffic signals and were blowing debris through the intersection.

The crosswalk is the scene of past auto-pedestrian accidents, Scott said.

Thursday night's tragedy occurred despite efforts by the Utah Department of Transportation to erect crossing signs and better mark the crosswalk.

Also, the nearby St. Anne's Rescue Mission had placed bright red walking flags on both sides of the crossing.

Scott said the couple hit Thursday night were not using the flags.

No citations were issued, and the incident remained under investigation.
