Two people were seriously hurt after turning in front of a TRAX train in West Valley City on Saturday night.

About 6:45 p.m., a 16-year-old and a green line train were both traveling north on 2700 West. When the teen reached the intersection with 3360 South, where the lights to keep going straight were green, he pulled into a turn lane that had a red light and tried to make a U-turn, said West Valley City Police Sgt. Trudy Cropper.

The northbound train hit the truck broadside and pushed it about 50 yards, Cropper said.

The driver and his 75-year-old female passenger were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Of the 16 or so people on board the train, two suffered minor injuries from the crash but were released at the scene, Cropper said.

Normal train traffic was expected to resume by about 9 p.m. Saturday.
