Logan • Matt Wells said Saturday evening that San Diego State's coaches had texted him after Utah State's 13-0 win over Colorado State.

"They said, 'Nice job. We're going to do our part,'" Wells said.

The Aztecs did their part in Utah State's hunt for a Mountain West championship by knocking off Mountain Division leader Boise State in a 34-31 overtime thriller. A touchdown pass made the difference as Aggie fans celebrated a win hundreds of miles away that could alter Utah State's fate.

The Aggies (7-4, 6-1) now control their own destiny. If they beat Wyoming next Saturday at home, they will travel to Fresno State to play for the Mountain West title.

It's the first time Utah State has been atop the division since falling to Boise State, 34-23, on Oct. 12, the week after star quarterback Chuckie Keeton was injured. But Wells put a good face on the situation, saying if the Aggies won out and the Broncos stumbled, Utah State would be up for a championship again.

After Utah State's shutout at Romney Stadium, the faith was finally repaid.

The Aggies have won four straight games in conference play, and now have the best winning streak in the conference outside of Fresno State, which is undefeated with BCS aspirations.

Wyoming (5-6, 3-4) will be playing for bowl eligibility next weekend. The Cowboys narrowly escaped Hawaii in a 59-56 overtime win on Saturday.
