Flood damages new spa at Grand America

Guests at the Grand America Hotel's elegant spa experienced a different kind of water treatment last week.

On Friday, an upper floor pipe broke and flooded the newly remodeled space, damaging new furniture, baseboards and carpets, said hotel marketing manager, Katharine Allison.

"We're in the process of drying out," she said on Monday morning.

After being closed all weekend, the unaffected portions of the spa will reopen Tuesday including the first-floor gym, the indoor pool and parts of the second floor — the spa's location before the remodel.

"We'll have all the same treatments just not in the new space," she said.

It is still unclear what caused the break or the cost of the damage, she said, but no one was injured in the mishap.

When the break occurred, she said, "employees from all the departments" came together and moved furniture and ripped out carpets.

A few weeks ago, the Grand America completed a six-month expansion and remodel of its Grand Spa, taking media on a tour and offering grand opening specials. The refined space spanned four floors — instead of just two — and took up 20,000 square feet, 4,400 more than before.

"It's heartbreaking," Allison said of the flood damage. "But we'll get it fixed and have a re-re-opening."
