A Moab man died Saturday afternoon when his parachute deployed too late during a BASE jump.
Daniel Moore, 22, jumped from the cliffs above State Road 128 Saturday just before 4:15 p.m., according Moab Lt. Scott Mallon. Witnesses told police Moore was in an "unusual head high position" as he fell and waved his hands to gain stability. He also missed his first attempt to deploy his parachute.
Police say the parachute completely opened, but it was too late and Moore hit the ground. It took crews 4 ½hours to retrieve his body due to especially treacherous conditions produced by a recent snow storm.
The accident happened at a popular BASE jumping location near mile marker 1 and inside Moab city limits, police say. Mallon also said Moore was a well-known and "seasoned base jumper."
