West Valley City police have arrested a 21-year-old woman for allegedly running over a stroller and then fleeing the scene. The 2-year-old boy who was in the stroller later died from his injuries.

Sgt. Jason Hauer said police arrested Kimberly Munoz, of West Valley City, on Monday on suspicion of third-degree felony hit and run and misdemeanor improper lookout after her ex-boyfriend turned her in.

Hauer said police received a call Sunday night from the ex-boyfriend's family members reporting that they had information on the June 10 fatal hit and run accident that killed 2-year-old Gavyn Barnett.

"They interviewed the ex-boyfriend and he basically told us about Kimberly," Hauer said. "She did [later] admit to investigators that she was the driver and she's the one who left the scene."

Hauer said Munoz, who briefly pulled over before driving away, claimed she fled because she was scared.

Police said Angela Barnett was crossing an uncontrolled portion of 5600 West near 4005 South about 9:45 p.m. June 10 with her two children, Serrena, 9, and Gavyn, who was in a stroller.

As Barnett crossed the street, a vehicle in the inside travel lane stopped or slowed to allow her to pass, but as the stroller entered the next lane, Munoz allegedly struck the stroller.

Gavyn Barnett later died from his injuries at Primary Children's Hospital.

Hauer said police also located the vehicle believed to have been involved in the crash, and it matched the description of the vehicle being sought.
