Ogden • Weber State fired football coach Jody Sears on Tuesday morning.
The Wildcats finished 2-10 this season. They were 4-19 overall and 3-13 in the Big Sky Conference during Sears' two seasons.
Sears took over the Weber program in the spring of 2012, when John L. Smith abruptly resigned before ever coaching a game.
"Jody was placed in a difficult situation, and we appreciate what he did for our football team," Weber State athletic director Jerry Bovee said in a statement.
"In the end, we haven't seen the progress in the program that we wanted and feel at this time it is best to make a change in our football leadership."
Bovee added that a search for the new coach will begin immediately.
Weber State opened this season with a 50-40 win over Stephen F. Austin. But back-to-back loses to Utah (70-7) and Utah State (70-6) set the tone for the rest of the year. The Wildcats were outscored 214-22 during one four-game stretch this season.
