Nine months after a massive rockfall closed access to Hickman Bridge in Capitol Reef National Park, the trail has been re-opened, the park service announced Wednesday.
On March 23, several hundred tons of material fell from cliffs above and blocked the only access to Hickman Bridge, a 133-foot span of rock that is one of the most popular destinations in the park.
The trail has been re-routed around the debris pile, but hikers are warned to continue to use caution because a portion of a retaining wall bordering the Fremont River was washed out during flooding in September.
Masonry work on the wall will be performed in the spring, as warmer temperatures allow, the park service said.
