A post-Thanksgiving domestic violence call led to a SWAT standoff at a West Jordan home early Friday morning, but the armed suspect eventually surrendered without firing a shot.

UPD Lt. Justin Hoyal said the 37-year-old man was taken into custody about 5:25 a.m. after SWAT officers, unable to talk the man out after several hours of negotiations, fired tear gas into the home at 4788 W. Udine Court (6700 South), West Jordan. The suspect then emerged and was taken into custody.

Hoyal said the incident began about two miles northwest of the arrest scene at another home the suspect owned, 6021 S. 5725 West, in Kearns. Just before 1 a.m. Friday, the suspect's girlfriend had called 911 to report her boyfriend had hit her, grabbed a handgun and threatened to kill her and himself.

Moments before officers could arrive, however, the suspect fled in his car. UPD officers soon located the vehicle parked outside the West Jordan address and surrounded the home. Because the man was known to be armed and steadfastly refused to communicate with police, UPD's SWAT unit was called.

Hoyal said the suspect was booked into Salt Lake County Jail on an aggravated domestic assault complaint.
