A 52-year-old man remained behind bars Monday on suspicion of felony assault and commission of a misdemeanor hate crime after allegedly threatening two people outside a Salt Lake City convenience store.

The suspect, a Salt Lake City man, approached the pair just before 3 p.m. Friday in a parking lot of a Sinclair gas station and one-stop shop at 1302 S. State Street, according to police.

The suspect brandished a knife, used a racial slur and then began chasing one of the two people, a black man, around the parking lot, a police report states. The victim was able to elude the attacker.

A 911 call brought Salt Lake City police to the scene. Officers found the suspect hiding in a restroom inside the store and took him into custody.

He was being held Monday in lieu of $10,420 bail on charges of third-degree felony aggravated assault and class B misdemeanor public intoxication, trespassing and the hate crime.
