A 26-year-old man struck down by a car in downtown Salt Lake City was in critical but improving condition Wednesday.

Salt Lake City police Detective Dennis McGowan did not release the victim's identity, but he said doctors reported his vital signs had been stabilized in the wake of surgery at a local hospital on Tuesday.

The man sustained serious head injuries when he was hit in the intersection of 200 South and 300 West late Monday night.

The southbound driver told police he did not see the man in time to avoid the accident.

McGowan said the incident remained under investigation.

It was uncertain if the victim was in a crosswalk at the time of the collision.
