An improperly connected child restraint seat was likely the primary factor in the death of 3-year-old girl in head-on collision in Clinton, police say.
Clinton Police Chief Bill Chilson said Thursday that Marisol Isabel Guitierrez, who was in a child seat just behind the driver of a Pontiac Grand Am, died in the 2 p.m. Wednesday crash.
The collision occurred when the westbound Grand Am driven by 26-year-old Joseph Jeffery Dickson veered into the eastbound lane of 1800 North near 1100 West and collided with a Dodge Durango.
An 18-month-old girl, Mariah Gutierrez, was in another, rear-facing child seat and escaped serious injury. Dickson remained in the hospital Thursday in critical condition. Also in critical condition was the Durango's driver, 43-year-old Amy Bair.
What caused Dickson to cross into oncoming traffic remained under investigation, Chilson said.
