Free health expo: flu shots, insurance advice

To cut through confusion about the Affordable Care Act and help Salt Lake City's uninsured enroll in the federal health exchange, community leaders are hosting an open house Saturday at the Sorenson Unity Center.

The all-day outreach event at 1383 S. 900 West is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Bilingual insurance counselors and navigators will be on hand to answer questions and help people shop the exchange.

Residents interested in applying for coverage at the event should plan to bring proof of income for the past 30 days and a Social Security number for each individual applying.

Families can learn about their eligibility for low-cost or free coverage through Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

The fair will also offer free flu shots to the first 100 attendees. Free health screenings will be available including eye, cholesterol, diabetes, blood pressure and STD testing.

Attendees can enter to win prizes.

Sponsors of the event include Salt Lake City, Voices for Utah Children, Communities United, the Utah AIDS Foundation, the Utah Health Policy Project, the Utah Pride Center and HIP Utah.
