West Valley City crash sends truck into Jordan River

Two people were injured Sunday when a truck and car collided, sending the truck into the Jordan River.

Shortly before 4 p.m., a woman was driving west on 3300 South in West Valley City when she suddenly veered across three lanes and into an eastbound lane near 1150 West, said West Valley City police Sgt. Trudy Cropper. An eastbound truck hit her car and went off the road and into the river, Cropper said.

By the time emergency responders arrived, the truck's driver — the only person inside — was free of the vehicle. He and a 10-year-old boy from the car were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, Cropper said.

Investigators say the driver of the car appears to have been distracted as she reached for something on the floor of her car, said Deputy Chief Mike Powell. Charges are being screened, Powell said.

The West Valley City Fire Department cleaned up the fuel that had leaked from the truck after the crash.
