Cedar City • Southern Utah has extended the contract of football coach Ed Lamb through the 2020 season, athletic director Ken Beazer announced Monday.

Lamb guided the Thunderbirds to an 8-5 record this season, including their first berth in the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

"I feel honored that [SUU officials] would consider me worthy for a contract extension," Lamb said in a statement. "I'm really excited about the team we have returning and the prospects for the future."

Lamb inherited an 0-11 team when he took the job at Southern Utah in 2008.

"Coach Lamb is a proven winner at this level, not only on the field, but with what he's been able to do with the development of our student-athletes off the field," Beazer said. "I'm looking forward to working with him in the years to come."
