IT professionals in demand next year in Salt Lake City

If you're an information technology professional, there will be no shortage of work in this otherwise down economy.

Eighty three percent of chief information officers (CIOs) in Salt Lake City plan on hiring more workers for their IT staffs in the first half of next year, according to a new survey by Robert Half Technology, an IT professional staffing company. That's compared to 74 percent the last half of this year.

Meanwhile, 16 percent of CIOs said they are putting hiring plans on hold for the first half of 2014, and none said they expect to reduce their staff.

In the "Robert Half Technology IT Hiring Forecast and Local Trend Report," 92 percent of Salt Lake City's CIOs felt good about their companies' prospects for growth next year, and three-quarters were confident the companies would invest in more IT projects.

"Growing business activity in Salt Lake City is driving the demand for IT professionals," Justin Rohatinsky, Salt Lake City branch manager of Robert Half Technology, said in a statement. "In particular, software and healthcare companies are seeking professionals skilled in web development, software upgrades and network administration."

Network administration was the most sought-after skill companies are looking for in IT workers, according to the survey. That's followed by database management and desktop support.

The survey asked 100 local CIOs their opinions on their hiring plans for the next six months.
