Utah State gets commitment from JC corner Ronnie Davis

With all three of Utah State's top corners graduating from the program after the season, the Aggies find themselves in need of help in the secondary.

The program secured a commitment Wednesday from junior college prospect Ronnie Davis, who could help Utah State do just that.

Davis, a 6-foot-1 corner with range and athleticism out of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, has been high on the program since visiting when the Aggies played Colorado State at home. There, he was taken in by the scenery and facilities. But he said he also felt at home with a coaching staff with several Oklahomans who understand where he comes from.

When Matt Wells flew to the school on Tuesday, the same day he was announced as the Mountain West coach of the year, that was the final push for Davis to make a pledge.

"I'm glad I know where I'm going, and I'm happy about my decision," he said. "It's another home away from home, and there are guys there who know where I'm from. It's a great place. I can't wait to set foot there on campus."

Davis also had offers from Kansas, New Mexico, Toledo and Colorado State, among others. He plans to sign a letter of intent on Dec. 18 and arrive on campus by Jan. 15.

After starting his football career as a quarterback, Davis switched to defense. NEO coach Sherard Poteete said while he came in as a raw athlete, he's become better and better in a secondary that actually will have at least three DI signees this year.

Davis was an honorable mention on the all-conference teams this year, recording four interceptions and six pass break-ups.

"He's got great instincts, and he's good at breaking on the ball," Poteete said. "He's got a knack for making some interceptions. ... He'll fit in well in the classroom, and on the football field, he can move well enough to run in man coverage, he can fit in a cover three and cover zone. He can read the QB. We think he can come in and do really well."

Cornerbacks coach Kendrick Shaver, who recruited Davis, told him the same things. But Utah State still wants him to work on some of his timing and his breaks.

Still, the Aggies seem to think they've found some invigorating talent at the cornerback position. And clearly, Davis isn't lacking for confidence either.

"I feel like I can come jump right into things," Davis said. "I feel like I can help them go that last little way, the extra mile to win the conference and fight for a BCS bowl. In my mind, all I want to do is win."
