Tip for Jesus? Ogden bar owner confirms PayPal's Selby left $1K tip

The man who left a $1,000 tip on a $49 tab in Ogden this August was Jack Selby, Alleged bar owner Jared Allen confirmed to The Tribune on Thursday.

A vice president of PayPal when the company was sold to eBay for $1.5 billion in 2002, Selby was first outed by The New York Post as the man behind a nationwide spree of massive tips with "@tipsforjesus" stamped on the receipt.

The Alleged bar tip was one of two bell-ringers the same weekend on Ogden's Historic 25th Street; a $5,000 tip was left on a $214.75 tab at Brewskis the previous night. Brewskis declined to comment on the tipper's identity, but a Facebook photo of the receipt showed that the patron used an American Express card. Selby used a rare American Express Centurion Card for his tip at Alleged, which had to get creative to accommodate his generosity given that their mobile payment app caps gratuities at 100 percent.

Neither of the Ogden tips bore the "@tipsforjesus" stamp.
