Cops nab mom, say she conspired with son to rob own Clearfield store

Police have arrested the manager of a Clearfield convenience store for allegedly conspiring with her son to rob the business.

Weber County Sheriff's Sgt. Lane Findlay said the 49-year-old woman was taken into custody Thursday afternoon in connection with the Oct. 27 holdup of the Marriott-Slaterville Maverik store.

Immediately following the robbery, the woman told police the masked gunman had approached her in the store's parking lot as she was leading to deposit the business' receipts in the bank. She claimed the suspect forced her into her own vehicle at gunpoint, made her drive to an area near the Marriott-Slaterville park, bound her with zip-ties and then made off with the money in another vehicle.

Findlay said detectives began to doubt the woman's story when evidence led them to arrest her 24-year-old son in Ogden. Under questioning, he told investigators that the holdup had been a ruse, and that his mother was in on it.

The woman denied the allegations, but Findlay said further investigation convinced detectives she was a willing part of the crime.

On Thursday, the mother was booked into the Weber County Jail on suspicion of second-degree felony theft and obstruction of justice; third-degree felony criminal solicitation; and class A misdemeanor making a false police report.

Her son still faces felony theft charges, Findlay said.
