MMA • Demetrious Johnson stopped Joseph Benavidez with a big right hand in the first round Saturday night in Sacramento, Calif., defending his UFC flyweight title in dramatic fashion.
Hometown favorite Urijah Faber stopped Michael McDonald in the second round, knocking the younger bantamweight into the side of the cage with punches before finishing with a guillotine choke.
Johnson (19-2-1) remained the only champion in the history of the UFC's lightest men's division, defending his belt for the third time. He caught Benavidez (19-4) directly in the face with an unblocked punch, knocking the challenger senseless just 2:08 into the fight.
Mets, Colon finish deal
MLB • Free-agent right-hander Bartolo Colon and the New York Mets finalized their deal, giving the team a starter to replace injured ace Matt Harvey. Colon and the Mets agreed to the two-year, $20 million deal Wednesday. Colon went 18-6 last year with a 2.65 ERA for Oakland. Harvey had elbow reconstruction surgery and is going to miss the 2014 season.
Kuchar, English in lead
GOLF • Matt Kuchar and Harris English took a four-stroke lead in Naples, Fla., in the Franklin Templeton Shootout, playing the back nine in 9-under 27 in the better-ball round for a 12-under 60. Kuchar and English were 20 under the Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort's Tiburon course. The team event ends Sunday with a scramble. Retief Goosen and Fredrik Jacobson were second after a 61.
