Utah State leading scorer and rebounder Jarred Shaw suspended

Utah State announced Monday morning that senior Jarred Shaw, the leading scorer and rebounding on the men's basketball team, is suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules.

The announcement has immediate and troubling consequences for an Aggies team that heavily relies on the 6-foot-10 center. A returning all-conference player, Shaw averages 16.1 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game, shooting 54.3 percent from the field. He's one of Utah State's few consistent double-double threats with two on the year, and averages 26.1 minutes per game.

The school news release did not specify any further on specific rule violations or whether Shaw would be able to rejoin the team this season.

Utah State's back-up true center is 6-foot-10 junior Jordan Stone, who averages 3.1 points per game and 2.8 rebounds per game. The Aggies may use Ben Clifford and Sean Harris in smaller lineups to play the five-spot, and 7-foot freshman Carson Shanks could come off his redshirt year.

Shaw's suspension comes on a week when Utah State is preparing to play in the Basketball Travelers, Inc., Classic, an annual tournament in which the Aggies play three games in three nights. The team will face Western Illinois, UC Santa Barbara and Troy during the tournament, which goes from Thursday to Saturday.
